SKILLS VOCATIONAL TRAINING

📍 Why It Matters

Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate sits at an alarming 33.3%, leaving millions of young people without viable pathways to income, growth, or purpose. The consequences of this are far reaching: rising poverty, increased migration pressure, and vulnerability to crime and exploitation.

In rural communities like Dikenafai, these challenges are magnified by limited access to vocational education, mentorship, and economic infrastructure. Many youth have the potential, they simply lack the platform to learn, create, and contribute meaningfully to society.

🌱 Our Response

The JF Community Centre Skills Vocational Training Program is our grassroots response to the youth unemployment crisis. Through hands on, creative, and practical training in sewing and tailoring, we empower young people with marketable skills they can use to start businesses, generate income, and support their families.

Participants are taught the essentials of bag and purse making, including design, fabric cutting, stitching, and finishing. They also gain exposure to pattern-making and proper use of both manual and industrial sewing machines, all in a supportive and community based learning environment.

This program is more than skill transfer, t's about helping youth rediscover their sense of worth, potential, and independence.

Our vocational program is open to youth aged 14 to 18 years in Dikenafai and nearby communities. Classes are held at our Centre’s multi-purpose room and facilitated by skilled local artisans.

We especially encourage young women and out of school youth to apply, as the program is designed to reduce barriers to participation and create opportunities for those most at risk of economic exclusion.

🧭 Key Goals

  1. Provide a hands on, interactive training platform for aspiring youth entrepreneurs

  2. Teach practical tailoring and design skills with real economic value

  3. Foster creativity, self reliance, and income generation

  4. Nurture the entrepreneurial mindset through exposure to basic business principles

  5. Serve as a mini-incubation hub where ideas can grow into real ventures

🌍 Our Vision Through This Program

We envision a future where every young person in Dikenafai can earn a living using their hands and their creativity. By equipping youth with practical vocational skills, we’re building a generation that can rise above unemployment, not just to survive, but to lead, build, and inspire others.

At JF Community Centre, we believe that every stitch is a step toward dignity, purpose, and community transformation.
